| Traits | Colorless transparent liquid with ether-like fragrance. Melting point -45.7°C, boiling point 81.6°C, relative density 0.786 (20/4°C), refractive index 1.3441, flash point 6°C, viscosity 0.35mPa at 20°C, critical temperature 274.7°C, critical pressure 4.8332MPa. Toxic, flammable, with a bright flame when burning. Miscible with water, methanol, methyl acetate, acetone, ether, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and vinyl chloride. It forms an azeotrope with water containing 84% of acetonitrile, and the azeotrope is 76°C. |
| Use | The main use of acetonitrile is as a solvent. For example, it is used as a solvent for extracting butadiene, a solvent for synthetic fibers and a solvent for some special coatings. Solvents used in the petroleum industry to remove tar, phenol and other substances from petroleum hydrocarbons. In the oil industry, it is used as a solvent for the extraction of fatty acids from animal and vegetable oils, and as a reaction medium for the recrystallization of steroids in medicine. When a polar solvent with a high dielectric constant is required, a binary azeotrope formed by acetonitrile and water is often used: 84% acetonitrile, boiling point 76°C. Acetonitrile is the intermediate of medicine (vitamin B1) and perfume, and the raw material for the manufacture of s-triazine nitrogen fertilizer synergist. Also used as a denaturant for alcohol. In addition, it can also be used to synthesize ethylamine, acetic acid, etc., and also has many uses in fabric dyeing and lighting industries. |
